Review of the computer game XCOM: Enemy Unknown
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a Turn-based tactical strategy computer game developed by the American studio Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games on October 9th, 2012 on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The storyline of the game unfolded in 2015, when the planet Earth is attacked by aliens without any warning and a large-scale alien invasion begins. In order to protect the world's population from an extraterrestrial threat, the League of Nations is activating the XCOM project. You are put in charge of a secret military base, which has advanced technologies, weapons and scientific developments of mankind. The project involves the best specialists in the world - military, scientists and engineers.
The program receives financial support from sixteen countries around the world: the USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, England, Russia, France, Germany, China, Japan, India, Australia, Egypt, South Africa and Nigeria. Your only task is to conduct combat operations against an extraterrestrial enemy that threatens the life of human civilization and defeat it at any cost, while preventing the capture of the planet. After getting acquainted with John Bradford, the director of the base, Dr. Valen, the chairman of the research department, and Dr. Raymond Shen, the lead engineer, you begin to complete the task assigned to you.
The gameplay is divided into two fundamentally different components - global strategy and tactical combat operations. The first one included an important economic part - you were free to choose how to spend the funds allocated by the League of Nations. The money went to everything from the purchase of equipment or military aircraft necessary for the operatives to the construction of new buildings for the underground base (laboratories, engineering workshops, electric generators, satellite tracking stations), and the development of the military or scientific potential of the base.
Since the amount has always been fixed, you should think carefully and weigh each decision before using limited financial resources. The tactical component of the game included intercepting recorded UFOs and preventing alien terror attacks using XCOM military operatives. All soldiers can be divided into four different classes or specializations: A stormtrooper is a melee specialist who can instantly put pressure on all aliens with a pump-action shotgun.;
A sniper is a master of ranged combat, he will often cover the entire team with accurate shots from afar, but is very vulnerable to close encounters with opponents.;
Heavy infantryman - he can be called the main firepower, equipped with a machine gun and a grenade launcher, he can "mow down" a lot of aliens in a game location in a matter of seconds.
