The Feast of the Five-petalled Rose
If you want to see with your own eyes the valiant knights and beautiful ladies of the medieval era, then you have a great opportunity to do this at the Five-Petalled Rose Festival.
The holiday is held every year in honor of the rose depicted on the coat of arms of the Rosenberg dynasty. The real Middle Ages is coming back to Czech Krumlov for three days. Craft fairs, jousting tournaments, street musicians and comedians seem to take us back many centuries. It's amazing to see how a medieval city lives its normal life. Merchants are calling in customers, and the townspeople are doing their daily chores. Everything is as it was many centuries ago.
To fully integrate into the holiday, you can rent a historical costume. Then you will be allowed to go on a holiday just like that. If there is still no suit, you will have to pay about 200 crowns. Admission is free for children under 10 years old.
The History of the Five-Petalled Rose Festival
The tradition of costumed festivals dates back to the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. And, of course, most of them were conducted in German. Such was the grand celebration in 1909, dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the Czech Krumlov. Then the main guest was Prince Adolf Joseph Schwarzenberg. The festive program included concerts by the city orchestra and choir, and historical battles were held on the main square of the city. The chronicles describe this holiday as a bright and unforgettable event for the whole city.
Unfortunately, later the idea of holding such events was forgotten for a long time. It was only in 1969-1970 that the Five-Petalled Rose Festival was restored. And then canceled again. Somehow, feudal lords were not favored under the communist system.
But it is impossible to cancel people's desire to know their history and traditions. And in 1986, the Five-Petalled Rose Festival was resumed. And it continues to delight the townspeople and numerous tourists every year.
The traditional holiday program
As a rule, all three days of the Five-Leaf Rose Festival are very busy. Performances and fairy tales, concerts and fairs, processions and carnivals are not a complete list of entertainment. The numerous participants and guests of the celebration will not have a single chance to get bored!
Every street has its own program. For three days, the city turns into a huge concert venue where everyone will find entertainment to their liking. Children will enjoy fairy tales, a fairytale fair, fakirs and magicians. Music lovers will be able to enjoy a variety of concerts of medieval music. Theatergoers will enjoy performances of classical ballads and medieval plays. Citizens can also participate in live chess.
At night, torchlight processions and fireworks will light up the city. And all this with music that will be played until the morning.
But, as a rule, there is a traditional program that basically remains the same from year to year.
There will definitely be jousting tournaments, historical markets, a costume parade, a colorful opening ceremony, live chess and fireworks this year.
